The Carnegie History Center, located at 125 S. College in downtown Tyler is in the location formerly occupied by the Carnegie Public Library and houses the Smith County Historical Society. Dating from 1914, it houses a fascinating
collection of materials related to local history. One of it’s functions is to display artifacts of the social, historic, political and economic culture of Smith County. Displays feature Indian, Republic of Texas, Civil War and Twentieth century eras. During the Depression, Dallas artist Douthett Wilson painted a series of murals, “Industry of East Texas,” for the library walls.

The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, from
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and admission is free, although donations are encouraged.
