Digital Submission Guidelines

This is information that you will need to successfully submit digital files for publication in the Tyler American Classifieds. If you need further information please contact your account representative.

Accepted Storage:

Floppy disks, CD, DVD, USB flash drive (formatted as Macintosh or Windows), certain digital media cards as used in digital cameras as long as they do not use a non-standard format. We can also download images from your digital camera as long as special software or cables are not required.

Accepted Formats:

.TIF, .PDF*, .EPS**, .JPG***

*See PDF production requirements/tips later in this document. **When submitting .EPS files, be certain to include all fonts (unless converted to outlines) and any bitmap graphic files that were used. Failure to do so may render the .EPS file unusable. ***.JPG files should be created at a resolution of 150 pixels per inch or greater and at no less than 100% of the desired final size and using as little compression as possible.

Accepted Compression Formats:

.sit, .sea, .zip, .tar, .gz, .tar.gz and most Windows, Macintosh and Unix/Linux compression methods.

Color Images:

All color images must be converted to CMYK color. RGB images will experience undesirable color shifting. SPOT AND PANTONE COLORS SHOULD BE AVOIDED for the same reason.

Spot Color:

Please contact our production department. Because we print on newsprint using a web press and 4 color (CMYK) process for all colors, spot colors, especially non-process pantone colors cannot be guaranteed. We will do our best to accommodate special color needs, but these requests must be discussed prior to publication.

Before Submitting a color ad:

Please print separations of the ad and check for problems with trapping, extra color places, etc. before sending the files to us. Spot and Pantone colors are not acceptable as they will be converted to CMYK and may not be able to maintain the correct hue.

Acceptable Programs:

We can accept files in the following native file formats for both Windows and Macintosh:

InDesign CS2 (3.0) and older:

Make certain that all fonts and images are included with your submission. All colors should be CMYK. NO SPOT OR PANTONE COLORS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Illustrator CS2 (12.0) and older:

Make certain that all fonts are converted to outlines and images are included with your submission. All colors should be CMYK. NO SPOT OR PANTONE COLORS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Photoshop CS2 (9.0) and older:

Resolution should be at least 150 dpi with color images converted to CMYK. Images should be flattened and saved as .TIF, or .EPS. .JPG files are acceptable but not recommended.

Unacceptable File Formats (NO EXCEPTIONS):

Submissions in the following file formats will be rejected.

Microsoft Word (except for text only), Microsoft Works, Microsoft Publisher, Word Perfect, PowerPoint, PageMaker. Only files in the accepted formats listed above will be allowed.

Suggested PDF Creation Method:

Files in Adobe's PDF (Portable Document Format) file format are the preferred method of ad interchange among the vast majority of shops, presses and publishers. The preferred method of creating a PDF is to use Adobe Acrobat Distiller. Adobe InDesign CS2 can also be used to export files in PDF format. Certain free programs that create "PDF" files such as PDFWriter are known to create files with inherent compatibility problems and should be avoided. Please note the following tips:

  • All color files should be composite CMYK (do not send separations), no RGB or Spot Colors.
  • Set the page size to the size of the ad materials and center the ad whenever possible.
  • For greatest compatibility, create your PDF as Acrobat 4.0 (PDF 1.3) compatible. Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4) will be accepted but is not recommended.
  • Set gray scale and color bitmap images to subsampling to 200 pixels per inch, auto (or jpeg) compression and maximum image quality
  • Set monochrome bitmap images should be set to subsampling to 600 pixels per inch and manual compression of CCITT Group 4
  • Under fonts, set embedding to Embed all fonts and subset fonts 100%
  • Unless otherwise arranged, leave color management turned off
  • Under the Advanced settings, be sure that Preserve Overprint is checked and leave DCS processing off

Sending Ads via E-mail: adgraphics@amclasstyler.com

Ads and ad materials may be emailed to adgraphics@amclasstyler.com (our old address of tntylads@tyler.net will continue to be checked). Please be sure to include your name, company name, account representatives name, a phone number and date you wish the ad to be published. You will receive an automatic reply to your email. Note that this reply is confirmation that we have received your email, not that your file(s) have been checked. Once your file(s) have been checked, you will be contacted if there are problems or questions. If you do not receive the confirmation email within 1 hour of sending your file during normal business hours please contact your account representative. When email ads or ad material(s), keep the following points in mind:

  • When sending attachments via email, the data must be encoded. This may add as much as 15-20% or more to the size of your email. Therefore sending an email with a 5 megabyte file attached may result in a message that is actually 6 megabytes in size.
  • Messages larger than 2 or 3 megabytes may cause problems with some servers which may have size limitations. Typical limits are 1.5, 3, 5 and 10 megabytes. Mail larger than 15 megabytes are almost always corrupted or refused by at least 1 mail server along the way.
  • The typical email message is processed by at least 3 and often several computers along the way. Because of this, it may take 30 to 45 minutes for a large email to be transmitted.
  • Whenever possible use a compression program to create a single compressed file from multiple attachments. This creates a single file that simplifies attachment and usually results in smaller data files.
  • If you repeatedly have problems with your mail server rejecting your messages due to size, contact your ISP. They will usually increase your per message and per mailbox size limits within reason but only upon request.
